One architect gave Ljubljana its modern face. Between the two world wars, Jože Plečnik reshaped the Slovenian capital with bridges, markets, promenades, parks, churches and the National and University Library, threading new public spaces through the old city with rare tenderness for what already stood. His human-scale approach ran against the modernist current of the age and turned a provincial Habsburg town into a symbolic national capital. UNESCO inscribed his Ljubljana works in 2021.
