Sailors once believed the huge double-lobed nut washed up on distant shores grew on trees beneath the sea; in truth the coco de mer — the plant kingdom's largest seed — grows in the palm forest at the heart of Praslin island. The Vallée de Mai preserves that primeval forest in nearly original condition, a green relic of the ancient Seychelles. UNESCO granted the reserve World Heritage status in 1983.
