Historic Villages of Korea: Hahoe and Yangdong

Confucian Korea endures in Hahoe and Yangdong. Founded in the 14th and 15th centuries and framed by wooded mountains, rivers and open fields, the two clan villages preserve the world of the early Joseon aristocracy: head-family residences and timber-framed houses, pavilions, study halls and academies, with mud-walled thatched cottages that once housed commoners clustered between. Poets praised these views in the 17th and 18th centuries; UNESCO inscribed the villages in 2010.
