Évora wears its centuries lightly: a Roman temple in the square, whitewashed lanes trimmed with azulejo tiles and wrought-iron balconies from the 16th to 18th centuries, and the calm of a town that hosted Portugal's kings in its 15th-century golden age. The architecture bred here travelled far — its influence marks Portuguese building across Brazil. UNESCO inscribed the historic centre in 1986.
