Évora is the principal city of the Alentejo and a UNESCO World Heritage Centre, encircled by medieval walls and containing Roman temple ruins, a Gothic cathedral, and the singular Chapel of Bones lined with skulls and femurs of approximately 5,000 monks. The Roman Temple of Évora, dating to the 2nd century CE, stands in the centre of the historic quarter with 14 Corinthian columns still erect. The city is also the centre of the Alentejo wine appellation.
