Indian Ocean commerce echoes through Qalhat, the walled port on Oman's east coast that boomed between the 11th and 15th centuries CE under the princes of Hormuz. Ships from India, China, East Africa and South-East Asia traded here, and the city's ruins — ramparts, necropolises and the shrine of Bibi Maryam — preserve that maritime world untouched by later building. UNESCO inscribed the Ancient City of Qalhat in 2018.
