Historically one of Oman's most important maritime trading ports, Sur once dominated the Indian Ocean dhow trade connecting Arabia with East Africa, India, and Southeast Asia. The town still operates a working dhow yard where traditional wooden vessels are constructed using techniques passed down through generations, making it one of the last active traditional boatyards in Arabia. A lagoon at the edge of the old town regularly attracts flamingos and other wading birds against a backdrop of restored watchtowers.
