Mud brick on stone foundations, on a giant scale: Bahla Fort rises above its oasis as testimony to the Banu Nebhan, the tribe that dominated this part of Oman from the 12th century to the end of the 15th. Walls and towers of unbaked earth made it a fortress like few others in Arabia. Bahla became Oman's first World Heritage Site when UNESCO inscribed it in 1987.
