Holland's cleverest fortress was made of water. Along more than 200 km of the country's economic heartland, two systems — the Defence Line of Amsterdam and the older New Dutch Waterline, built between 1815 and 1940 — combined forts, dikes, sluices and pumping stations to flood the land deliberately and stop any invader. UNESCO first inscribed the Amsterdam line in 1996 and later broadened the listing into the Dutch Water Defence Lines.
