Everything in Sagarmatha tilts toward the roof of the world: glaciers, plunging valleys and the summit of Everest itself at 8,848 m. Snow leopards and red pandas survive in the park's thin air, and Sherpa villages, monasteries and trails give the landscape its human warmth. Nepal's high-altitude icon joined the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1979, and the trek toward Everest Base Camp remains a rite of passage.
