Tengboche is a Sherpa village at 3,867 metres in the Khumbu Valley, site of the largest monastery in the region and a standard overnight stop on the Everest Base Camp trek. The Tengboche Monastery, rebuilt after a 1989 fire, sits on a promontory with an unobstructed view of Ama Dablam, Thamserku, and Kantega. The Mani Rimdu festival, held annually at the monastery in late autumn, features masked dance performances by monks drawing both local Sherpa communities and international trekkers.
