The Knights of St John began Valletta in 1566, the year after they survived the Great Siege, and built a fortress-capital on a grid across the Sciberras peninsula between two superb natural harbours. Within just 55 hectares stand 320 monuments — from St John's Co-Cathedral, floored with knights' tombs, to auberges and bastions — one of the densest historic ensembles anywhere. UNESCO inscribed the City of Valletta in 1980.
