Docklands is Melbourne's waterfront redevelopment district, a modern precinct built on former shipping wharves at the western edge of the central business district, wrapped around the harbour where the Yarra River meets Victoria Harbour. Reclaimed from disused docks in the 2000s, it is a planned mix of apartment towers, offices, a stadium and a broad promenade of restaurants and bars.

The waterfront is the focus. NewQuay and the Docklands promenade line the harbour with cafes, waterside dining and moored yachts, while the district's signature Melbourne Star observation wheel — now closed — once turned above the skyline. Public artworks, including a striking silver 'Cow up a Tree' sculpture and reef-like installations, dot the walkways.

Sport and events anchor it. Marvel Stadium, a retractable-roof arena, hosts football, cricket and concerts at the district's southern end, filling the streets on match days. The Library at the Dock, an award-winning timber community building, and a small maritime heritage fleet add cultural texture to what is otherwise a sleek, contemporary quarter.

Practical notes: Docklands is a short walk or free City Circle tram ride from the central business district, with Southern Cross Station on its edge; it is flat, modern and fully accessible. The precinct can feel quiet on weekday evenings but comes alive on event days and warm weekends along the water. Dining ranges from casual to mid-range waterside restaurants. The exposed harbour edge can be windy, so bring a layer. Combine a visit with the adjacent Southern Cross Station and the western end of the city grid. Weekend markets, a small maritime heritage fleet and seasonal events along the harbour give the precinct occasional bursts of life, and the free City Circle tram makes it an easy add-on to a tour of central Melbourne.
