Shangxiajiu Pedestrian Street

Guangzhou's classic shopping arcade, Shangxiajiu Pedestrian Street runs through the historic Xiguan quarter of Liwan district, a bustling artery of commerce lined by the arcaded shophouses known as qilou. For generations of Cantonese this has been the place to shop, snack and stroll, and it remains one of the most characterful and crowded streets in the city.

The architecture sets the scene. The qilou buildings, two or three storeys of ornate facades with overhanging upper floors supported on columns, create a continuous covered walkway that shelters pedestrians from sun and rain alike, a style born in the humid south and blended with European decorative touches. Their pastel plasterwork and carved details give the street a distinctive early twentieth-century flavour that survives above the modern shopfronts below.

Food is half the reason to come. Xiguan is a heartland of Cantonese cooking, and the lanes around Shangxiajiu are famous for their old snack houses and dessert shops, serving everything from rice-noodle rolls and wonton noodles to double-skin milk custard and countless dim sum. Grazing your way along the street, ducking into a century-old teahouse, is the quintessential local experience.

For visitors, the street is free to wander and fully pedestrianised, busiest in the evenings and at weekends when it fills with shoppers and families. It sits close to the Shamian Island enclave and the temples of the old town, so it slots naturally into a day exploring historic Guangzhou. Come hungry, keep an eye on your belongings in the crush, and let the crowds carry you between the food stalls, fabric shops and pharmacies that give the arcade its enduring energy.
