Slovenia's whitewater capital, Bovec sits high in the Soča Valley beneath the peaks of the Julian Alps, where the luminous turquoise Soča River makes it the country's leading base for water and mountain sports.

The activities are rafting, kayaking and canyoning. The Soča offers grade two to four whitewater, from gentle family rafting stretches to livelier rapids for kayakers, all run in the river's famously clear emerald water over pale limestone. Nearby side-gorges provide canyoning descents of jumps, slides and abseils, graded from beginner-friendly to demanding. Operators clustered in town supply wetsuits, helmets and guides, so novices and experienced paddlers alike are covered, and hydrospeed and stand-up paddling add further options.

Beyond the water, Bovec is a full multi-sport hub with paragliding from the surrounding ridges, via ferrata, mountain biking and alpine hiking to peaks and waterfalls, plus a ski centre on Mount Kanin in winter. The valley also carries a sombre history as a fiercely contested First World War front, marked by fortifications and museums.

Practical detail: Bovec lies about two hours from Ljubljana over mountain roads, or via the scenic hairpins of the Vršič Pass in summer. The water-sports season runs from spring to early autumn, roughly April to October, with the highest flows in late spring from snowmelt and the warmest conditions in July and August. The spring-fed water stays cold, so a wetsuit matters even in high summer.
