Matosinhos

Matosinhos is Porto's surf beach, a broad urban strand just north of the Douro river mouth and reachable from the city on the metro. Framed by a harbour breakwater and a promenade, it is the most accessible place to surf near Portugal's second city.

The wave is a forgiving beach break, protected somewhat by the port's outer wall, which keeps it more manageable than the fully exposed coast further north. Sandbars produce gentle, well-spaced peaks that make it one of the best learning beaches in the region, with several schools working the sand daily. On bigger, cleaner swells the banks can sharpen up and offer faster walls for intermediate surfers.

Autumn and winter bring the most consistent north-west groundswell, while the summer nortada keeps things smaller and busy with beginners. Because the breakwater filters the biggest storm energy, the beach stays rideable on days when open coasts are unruly.

The town is famous for grilled fish and seafood, its restaurants sending charcoal smoke across the waterfront, and the metro link makes it an easy day trip from central Porto. Board rental, cafes and a long paved promenade line the beach, and level access from the seafront makes getting in and out simple, which adds to its appeal as a relaxed city surf base.
