This slender granite lighthouse stands at the end of an exposed stone jetty in the Foz district, where the Douro river meets the Atlantic on the western edge of Porto. Built in the late nineteenth century, it is famous for the towering spray that engulfs it during Atlantic storms, drawing photographers to capture water crashing over the tower. A palm-lined promenade follows the coast past Art Nouveau villas, cafés and tidal rock pools, making the walk out to the lighthouse a favourite among residents and visitors.
