Riga rewards those who look up: whole streets of the Latvian capital bloom with Jugendstil facades — masks, sphinxes and swirling ornament — widely counted the finest Art Nouveau ensemble in Europe. They ring a medieval core built on Hanseatic trade wealth of the 13th to 15th centuries, alongside neoclassical wooden suburbs laid out in the 19th. UNESCO inscribed the historic centre in 1997 for this rare layering of merchant-city eras.
