The Esplanade is the broad landscaped park in central Riga that surrounds the golden domes of the Orthodox cathedral. Laid out in the nineteenth century on former parade ground, the open green links several major landmarks, including the art museum and the university. Tree-lined paths, lawns and monuments make it a popular place for strolling, festivals and open-air markets. The park forms part of the belt of green boulevards that ring the medieval core, separating the old town from the elegant districts built during the city's rapid growth.
