A crater lake high in the Mauritian interior and the island's most sacred Hindu site, ringed by temples and watched over by a towering statue of Shiva. During Maha Shivaratri, hundreds of thousands of pilgrims walk here from across the island carrying wooden kanwar structures. Outside festival time the lakeside is calm, with monkeys and eels among the offerings.
