Rivière Noire Peak, also called Piton de la Petite Rivière Noire, is the highest point in Mauritius, reaching around 828 metres in the island's southwest. It lies within the forested uplands of the Black River Gorges, and a well-trodden trail leads through native forest to its summit. From the top, hikers gaze across the plunging gorges, distant reefs and the patchwork of sugar plantations below. The peak marks the biological heart of the island, surrounded by some of the last remaining stands of endemic Mauritian forest.
