Six mighty forts — at Chittorgarh, Kumbhalgarh, Jaisalmer, Jaipur, Sawai Madhopur and Jhalawar — carry the memory of the Rajput princely states that flourished from the 8th to the 18th centuries. Some walls run up to 20 kilometres around, enclosing palaces, temples, urban quarters and ingenious water-harvesting works, all exploiting hills, desert, rivers and forest as natural defences. The serial site was inscribed as UNESCO World Heritage in 2013.
