Chittorgarh Fort is the largest fort in India by area, spreading across approximately 700 acres on a mesa rising 180 metres above the surrounding plains of southern Rajasthan. The fortress was the capital of the Mewar kingdom and saw three historic sacks, including the jauhar — mass self-immolation — of Rajput women to avoid capture. Within the vast perimeter sit palaces, reservoirs, over 60 temples, and the 37-metre Vijay Stambha, or Tower of Victory, a carved stone column that is one of the finest pieces of medieval Indian stone carving.
