Hollókő shows what Central European village life looked like before 20th-century agriculture transformed it. Developed mainly through the 17th and 18th centuries and deliberately preserved, the old village in Nógrád County remains lived-in rather than embalmed, its traditional houses and surrounding fields still forming one working landscape. UNESCO inscribed Hollókő and its surroundings in 1987.
