Europe's earliest advanced civilization rose on Crete, and six archaeological sites spanning 1900 to 1100 BCE now stand for it together. The Minoan palatial centres — administrative, economic and religious hubs in one — display sophisticated architecture and town planning, vivid frescoes and some of the world's earliest writing systems: testimony of a maritime culture whose influence shaped the Mediterranean. The serial property was inscribed as UNESCO World Heritage in 2025.
