Knossos is the largest Bronze Age archaeological site on Crete, located a few kilometres south of Heraklion, and considered the ceremonial and political centre of the Minoan civilization between approximately 1700 and 1400 BCE. The partially reconstructed palace complex covers an area of around 22,000 square metres and includes throne rooms, storage magazines, ceremonial staircases, and chambers decorated with vivid fresco reproductions. The site is associated with the mythological figure of King Minos and the labyrinth of the Minotaur.
