On the small Dodecanese island of Pátmos, tradition holds that St John the Theologian wrote his Gospel and the Book of Revelation. A monastery honouring the 'beloved disciple' was founded in the late 10th century and has drawn pilgrims and Orthodox scholars ever since, its fortress-like bulk rising above the Cave of the Apocalypse and the old settlement of Chorá. The ensemble joined the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1999.
