Patmos is a volcanic island in the northern Dodecanese associated with the composition of the Book of Revelation, attributed to John of Patmos writing in the Cave of the Apocalypse on the island's hillside. The fortified Monastery of Saint John the Theologian, founded in 1088 and visible from most of the island's coast, crowns the hill above the cave site. The island's capital Chora is a well-preserved medieval settlement of white cubic houses and winding lanes protected by the monastery's circuit walls.
