The ancients called Delphi the navel of the world, and the sanctuary still feels like it: temples and a theatre stacked against a superb mountain landscape where the oracle of Apollo delivered her pronouncements. By the 6th century BC this pan-Hellenic shrine was the religious heart of the Greek world and a symbol of its unity. Delphi was inscribed as UNESCO World Heritage in 1987.
