The sanctuary of Apollo at Delphi occupies a dramatic natural shelf on the southern slopes of Mount Parnassus above the Pleistos river valley, where the ancient Greeks believed the world's navel — the omphalos — to be located. The Sacred Way ascends through a sequence of treasury buildings to the Temple of Apollo, within whose inner sanctum the oracle delivered her prophecies. The theatre above and the stadium at the summit host the Pythian Games; the adjacent Delphi Archaeological Museum displays the bronze Charioteer, one of antiquity's best-preserved sculptures.
