Asante Traditional Buildings

North-east of Kumasi, a scatter of shrine buildings preserves the last physical remains of the once-mighty Asante civilization, at its height in the 18th century. Built of earth, wood and straw, the structures are acutely fragile — weather alone threatens them — which makes their survival all the more precious. The Asante Traditional Buildings were inscribed as UNESCO World Heritage in 1980.
