The capital of the Ashanti Region and historic seat of the Ashanti Kingdom, Kumasi is Ghana's second city and the centre of kente cloth production and Asante cultural traditions. The Kejetia Market, one of the largest open-air markets in West Africa, anchors the city's commercial life, while the Manhyia Palace serves as the residence of the Asantehene and maintains a small museum on Ashanti royal history. The surrounding villages of the Kente Weaving District operate traditional strip-loom weaving that visitors can observe directly.
