Strung along Ghana's coast between Keta and Beyin stand the forts and castles of the Atlantic trade — fortified posts built between 1482 and 1786, beginning with the Portuguese during their age of maritime expansion. Later drawn into the trans-Atlantic slave trade, they endure today above all as places of memory. UNESCO inscribed the ensemble as World Heritage in 1979.
