One of the largest slave-holding castles along the West African coast, Cape Coast Castle is a UNESCO World Heritage Site that served as a principal departure point for enslaved Africans during the transatlantic slave trade from the 17th to 19th centuries. The castle's dungeons, where captives were held before being forced through the Door of No Return, are preserved as a site of memorial and education. The whitewashed exterior faces the Gulf of Guinea and is among the most visited historical sites in Ghana.
