ShUM Sites of Speyer, Worms and Mainz

Speyer, Worms and Mainz — ShUM, after the Hebrew initials of the three Rhine cities — were the cradle of Ashkenazi Jewish life in medieval Europe. This serial property gathers the Speyer Jewry-Court with its intact underground mikveh, the Worms Synagogue Compound with its monumental 12th-century ritual bath, and the old Jewish cemeteries of Worms and Mainz — buildings that became models for Jewish communities across the continent. UNESCO inscribed the ShUM sites in 2021.
