The Römerberg is the historic central square of Frankfurt's old town and the ceremonial heart of the city for centuries. On its western side stands the Römer, a cluster of gabled buildings that has served as the city hall since the fifteenth century. The square once hosted imperial coronation festivities for Holy Roman Emperors crowned in the nearby cathedral. Flattened by wartime bombing, the surrounding half-timbered houses were meticulously reconstructed, and the ornate Fountain of Justice stands at the centre of it all.
