Four towers and twin domes crown Speyer Cathedral, one of the grandest Romanesque churches of the Holy Roman Empire. Conrad II founded it in 1030 and it was remodelled late in the same century; for nearly three hundred years it served as the burial place of German emperors and kings, a monument to imperial power in stone. UNESCO inscribed Speyer Cathedral as a World Heritage Site in 1981.
