For 65 kilometres the Rhine cuts a dramatic gorge lined with castles, vineyards and huddled riverside towns — a landscape so steeped in legend, from the Lorelei rock onward, that it has inspired poets, painters and composers for centuries. This stretch of the Upper Middle Rhine vividly records two thousand years of human life bound to a spectacular natural setting. UNESCO inscribed the Upper Middle Rhine Valley as a World Heritage Site in 2002.
