The Middle Rhine Valley between Bingen and Koblenz forms a deeply incised gorge where the river has carved through the Rhenish Massif over millions of years. More than 40 medieval castles and fortified towers crown the steep vine-covered slopes, making the stretch one of the most castle-dense riverscapes in Europe. The UNESCO-listed cultural landscape is typically explored by river cruise, cycle path, or by train on either bank.
