A sheer slate cliff rising 132 metres above the narrowest and shallowest bend of the Rhine near the town of St. Goarshausen, the Lorelei has long been associated with a legendary siren figure in German Romantic literature. The site commands sweeping views upstream and downstream along the gorge, and the rock face itself turns warm amber in afternoon light. A terrace at the summit offers one of the most dramatic Rhine panoramas in the region.
