Caves of Aggtelek Karst and Slovak Karst

Beneath the wooded hills along the Hungarian-Slovak border lies an underground realm of more than 700 known caves, dissolved out of limestone across tens of millions of years. Their formations preserve a rare overlap of tropical and glacial climatic signatures in a single temperate karst system, and the most famous cave, Baradla-Domica, runs directly beneath the frontier, entered from both countries. The caves of the Aggtelek Karst and Slovak Karst were inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1995.
