Aconcagua Provincial Park protects the approaches to Mount Aconcagua, at 6,961 metres the highest peak in both the western and southern hemispheres. Two base camps serve mountaineers on different ascent routes: Plaza de Mulas on the Normal Route to the north and Plaza Argentina on the Polish Glacier Route to the east. Trekking permits allow non-climbers to reach Confluencia or Plaza de Mulas for close views of the south face, one of the largest high-altitude rock faces in the world.
