A cluster of seven high-altitude lakes in the Sierra del Ajusco-Chichinautzin mountain range on the border of Morelos and Estado de México, Zempoala sits between 3,000 and 3,300 meters elevation within a national park of pine and fir forests. The lakes vary in size and depth, and the surrounding forest provides habitat for white-tailed deer, coyotes, and a variety of migratory birds. The cool mountain air, endemic wildflowers, and the forested ridge hiking trails attract day-trippers from Mexico City.
