The Bosque de Tlalpan is a large protected forest park in the south of Mexico City, preserving a remnant of the volcanic scrubland and woodland that once covered the valley's edges. Its trails wind through oak, pine and native scrub across rocky, uneven terrain formed by ancient lava flows. Popular with runners and hikers, the reserve shelters birds, reptiles and other wildlife within the sprawling city. Interpretive paths and exercise circuits make it a valued natural refuge in the southern districts.
