Karnak's forest of columns, Luxor's grand temple, and the royal tombs cut into the Valleys of the Kings and Queens: ancient Thebes concentrates the peak of pharaonic civilization on both banks of the Nile. Capital of Egypt through the Middle and New Kingdoms and sacred city of the god Amon, Thebes today lies within modern Luxor, its monuments still overwhelming in scale. UNESCO inscribed the city and its necropolis as a World Heritage Site in 1979.
