The largest ancient religious complex ever built, located on the east bank of the Nile near Luxor, and constructed incrementally over roughly 2,000 years by successive pharaohs of the New Kingdom. The Hypostyle Hall within the precinct of Amun contains 134 massive sandstone columns, the largest standing 21 metres tall, their closely spaced arrangement creating an interior of cathedral-like scale and darkness. The Sacred Lake, processional avenues, and multiple subsidiary temples occupy a precinct of roughly 100 hectares. Photography within the forest of columns in the Hypostyle Hall rewards both wide-angle and detail work.
