Elk Island National Park is a small, fenced sanctuary on the Beaver Hills moraine east of Edmonton, protecting one of the highest concentrations of hoofed animals per unit area in the world. Both plains bison and the rarer wood bison graze the park's aspen parkland alongside moose, elk, and white-tailed deer. The park's flat terrain and limited light pollution make it an effective dark sky location within easy reach of Edmonton's metropolitan area.
