Kootenay National Park forms the western arm of the Canadian Rocky Mountain Parks World Heritage Site, straddling Highway 93 as it descends from the Continental Divide through the Rocky Mountain Trench toward the Columbia River lowlands. The park encompasses the Vermilion River Valley, the Marble Canyon slot canyon, the Paint Pots mineral springs with their ochre-stained mud beds, and the Radium Hot Springs pools.
