Charleston's historic peninsula contains one of the largest collections of pre-Revolutionary architecture in the United States, including antebellum single houses oriented sideways to the street to catch prevailing sea breezes. The Battery seawall and White Point Garden at the southern tip of the peninsula overlook Charleston Harbor, with Fort Sumter visible on a low island in the distance. The neighborhood streets of South of Broad are lined with walled gardens, piazzas, and ironwork gates that reveal craftsmanship spanning three centuries.
