This theater in the French Quarter of Charleston occupies a building whose origins trace to one of the first purpose-built playhouses in the American colonies, opened in 1736. The present structure incorporates an early nineteenth-century hotel later converted back into a theater during the 1930s, its interior fitted with carved cypress woodwork and a graceful auditorium. Home to a resident acting company, it continues to stage plays in an intimate historic setting.
